What is the purpose of a power storage?
A power storage captures PV surpluses during the day and releases them in the evening/night. Result: less grid reliance, higher self-consumption rate, and optional backup in case of grid failure (depending on the inverter).
How it works – briefly explained
- PV generates DC → Inverter charges the 48 V LFP storage (DC).
- When needed, the storage discharges controlled via the inverter into the house grid (AC).
- Closed-Loop (CAN/RS-485) ensures correct charging profiles, state of charge, and protection functions.
Advantages
- More self-consumption and predictable grid reliance.
- LFP chemistry: stable cell chemistry, high safety level, long cycle life.
- Modularly expandable: capacity grows with demand.
- Optional backup operation (depending on inverter function and switching logic).
Sizing – pragmatic guidelines
- Start with 5–10 kWh, expand based on actual consumption and peak loads.
- Rule of thumb for backup time: Usable kWh ÷ avg. load (kW) = hours of autonomy.
- Wallbox/heat pump: plan for more capacity or load management.
Installation & Operation
- Location: dry, dust-free, no direct sunlight; maintain air gap for cooling.
- Cables: correct cross-section, short lines, clean busbars for multiple modules.
- Prefer closed-loop (CAN/RS-485) – avoids false readings and protects cells.
Maintenance & Storage
- Low maintenance in normal operation (BMS monitors voltage, current, temperature).
- For long-term storage: 40–60% SoC, cool and dry; recharge to >80% every ~6 months.
